'Ticking boxes' affect whether you are a winner?

I wasn't sure where exactly to post this, but it's something that's always crossed my mind when entering competitions.

Can companies set up their competitions form to become 'invalid' if you refuse to tick the boxes to sign up to newsletters/pass on details/sign away your life:eek: etc.

Wondered if anyone could shed any light on this! :o

Thanks!

(I also had a grammar nazi moment with 'affect' or 'effect', so apologies if I've used the wrong one!)

Always wondered that as well. You probably do get some that will exclude you if don't do all the "optional" stuff that they want rom you.

I don't know generally, however I can say that on one occasion, it was only because I ticked yes that I won the competition..... HTH

11 If you opt in or out of their mailing / 3rd party mailings, does it affect your chances?
I ALWAYS indicate a big fat 'no' to both of those, unless it is something that I'd really like to hear more about or a comp you enter by signing up for their newsletter.

It should make no difference to whether you are included in the comp or not, although some smaller companies may break the rules. I have to say I’ve been really lucky with wins & it seems to have made no difference whatsoever to my chances by always opting out where I can. It just means that I end up with less spam & on less junk mail lists.

    hthx

I have always been convinced that ticking the boxes increases your chance of winning.

  • There are fairness rules within the Data Protection Act which mean that they shouldn't really do it, but just in case they do I use a special email address and let them mail me all they like.
Some companies sell personal data therefore can make money if you tick the box which says they can give your data to 'carefully selected third parties'... I'm guessing this is why some companies do competitions and why I think you are more likely to win if you tick the box to say they can
