council house & new partner

Hello,

I wonder if anyone could give me some advice. I am a registered carer & work voluntarily for a charity , am a mature student therapist and at present receive Carers allowance and DLA for my son and as such I live in a council flat.

I have met a special someone after 15 years of being alone :) He owns his flat, and we have discussed him moving in with me and renting out his flat ( he has just been made redundant ) but I was wondering if this is legal?

We will not be claiming any benefits but will be living off of his savings until he finds a new job or I qualify.

I am the only one on the tenancy and it is a secure (lifetime) tenancy, but if he rents out his flat is that allowed or even legal? It's worrying me as I don't want to do anything wrong. Will he have to sell it to move in with me?

Do I need to let anyone know (except dla & carers) that he is moving in or does he just start paying the rent?

Advice would be much appreciated.

You need to retain the tenancy in your name and he can let the flat out and use the income to support himself.

It will affect your benefits and if you get a student loan/bursary, it will affect these.

Your sons DLA and your carers allowance are not affected as they are not means tested, so no need to inform them. As for the other i have no idea but someone will no doubt be along soon with info. Oh and good luck in your relationship.

Sorry after re-reading your post i think you already knew that about the DLA etc...duh.
