this credit report....
I checked out my experian credit report, and it has on it my current account, '0' ie being used within it's set criteria and with £550 overdraft facility....
then 3 defaults.... which i was unaware of, one of them is 'satisfied' as of 17/12/2000, and the other 2 defaulted in 2000 sums of £39 and £40 ...aswell as bl**dy Nationwide account where i'm paying off bank charges that that i hadn't caused....(another story Grrrr)
no loans, credit cards or mortages
no bankrupcy
I just was mailshot for a 0% egg card but i doubt i would be offered it, but i wasn't sure about any other companies.......
I do not tend to SBT with the card but just to use sparingly when i need to at end of month emergencies if they occur etc
TIA

Hmm... it does seem unlikely that you would qualify for some of the best deals (ie 0%). I wouldn't say you won't get a credit card, because you probably would... but I would think its more likely to be ones with high interest rates (which takes account of the extra risk to the lender due to defaults), low credit limits and not a great deal of actual card benefits. But you could always try applying to egg and see what happens... but remember each time you apply for credit the file search will be left of the file (along with the company name and type of product you were apply for)... so be careful about applying too much within a short period.
I think defaults are on your file for 6 years... so in about 1.5 years those defaults should be gone.
If you don't get a card from egg, it might be worth applying to get one of the "initial" credit cards from something like Barclaycard or Capital One - spending a small amount on it each month - and MAKING SURE you pay it back in full and on time so it doesn't cost you any interest. That would allow you to build up some positive repayment history on your credit file... more 0's

One thing that you might consider is writing (or e-mailing) Experian regarding this. Bearing in mind the dates and sums involved, they may be able to take it forwards.
In addition you could contact the credit card companies after your application to explain the situation.
I am speaking from recent experience: out of interest - (and as it was free!) I checked out my Experian report in March (expecting a perfect report) - and discovered a default from 2000 for £10.03 (which was settled). This stopped me from opening a Alliance Leicester Premier Plus Account & Credit Card.
I rang A&L (the underwriting department) and they explained they had an automated system which rejected applications if there was any default. After a short discussion, they changed their mind and opened an account with the card.
I also contacted Experian - and queried the default. They gave me the contact details of the company (Vodafone) - and between them they are going to sort it out. I think the records only stay for 6 years anyway? (Is that correct MSE gurus?).0 -
Thank you both for your replies/advice....
I will obviously be paying off the £79 owed to the 2 defaulted accounts, then at least they will be marked 'satisfied' aswell, maybe i should wait for a couple more months so they will show up as 'satisfied' on my report , but then i suppose they are still classed as defaulted accounts.....
Oh well, probably a good thing not to get a credit card lol0
