Can all the trolls stay on page one please and let the adults chat on page two
Gosh! so many comments on that page about getting pregnant and other rubbish...
Anyway in reply to poster (original one that is!) you said you earn 20k yet your partner is on JSA or trying to get JSA
You do know JSA is capped at someone earning 16k income coming in or savings ect to get it so might be the reason you was knocked back for it.
just a idea but you could ask why your partner was rejected
hope that helps
flex"MSE Money saving challenges..8/12/13 3,500 saved so far :j" p.s if i been helpfully please leave me a thank you but seek official advice at all times from a pro0 -
If the OPs partner paid the right NI contributions for the two previous tax years then he would get contributions based JSA of £71 for 6 months. However, I believe some self employed don't pay the right type of stamp.0

Self employed individuals earning below a certain amount can opt out of paying NI but then don't get benefits like JSAc if the business folds. I never opted out in the early days of self employment for this very reason. It seemed daft for the sake of saving only £10 a month and losing out on the potential help if the worst had happened. If the OPs partner paid the right NI contributions for the two previous tax years then he would get contributions based JSA of £71 for 6 months. Maybe so but are you paying a mortgage as well?I dont actually see why you are cross about not getting benefits when you are earning £20K a year. My OH and I are pensioners and live on half of that.
And no, apart from 160% state pension we dont claim anything from the government.
And you don't travel back and for to work, buy clothes for work etc.
If you are both living on £10k then you are actually entitled to benefits as you are living under your applicable amount. Don't know your ages but min amount you should have to live on per week for a pensioner couple where one is 60-64 is £217.90 per week. Where one or both are 65 or over then amount is £241.65
Your income is £192.31 per week if on £10k per annum
I would advise you claim at least pension credits and Ctb/hb? Your choice though.0 -

No we dont have a mortgage, but if you gave me another £10k a year, I would quite happily go back to paying for one.
I still have to buy clothes. We also run a car.
We have 2 small private pensions which takes us just over the pension credit limit. And savings of course from us both working all our lives.
We manage, very well as it happens.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I'm not cross- I was asking for advice and expressing my dismay that the government doesn't have a more progressive tax system that would potentially help a lot of people- possibly even yourself. Neither of us particularly want to claim benefits but any help that might help us keep our heads above water whilst he's looking for any kind of job would have been very welcome.
Thanks for the advice everyone. I've already completed a financial overhaul and can't make savings anywhere else (other than the car...). Unfortunately because my husband's business did not make enough money for us to save anything- it all went back into the business to keep it going. Apparently he didn't pay the 'right' stamp so there's not much else really that can be done I suppose! :embarasse0 -
When I was in debt and struggling to pay my mortgage alone I got a part time evening job, in addition to the full time day job. I worked another 20 hours a week on top of the 37 hours in the daytime.
Getting additional evening work is the best way forward for you, maybe for him too if he can't find a daytime job. It's not for ever. Give it a whirl.0 -
I think that's a good option Loanranger. I'll have a look into it and see what's going- saw some pizza delivery jobs the other day but not sure how petrol cost to earnings would work out. Don't suppose you know what the tax rate would be on a second income for me? Would it still be 20% or would it be higher? Tax confuses the hell out of me!0

If you are a normal rate tax payer, yes any extra earnings and you will pay 20%.
If you want, you could post an SOA and we could possibly see things to cut down on, sometimes, things like this is better with fresh eyes.
Good Luck to you both.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
