Italian traffic fine

We've just had a bill through from Italy, my husband apparently drove in a lane reserved for public vehicles when we were on holiday last May! We had been waiting for this to come through as we got a bill from the hire car company in September for their admin charge in supplying the police with the information. You can't accuse the Italian's of being prompt!

This isn't speeding, so would we need to declare it to our UK insurance company?

I've read that some of the foreign motoring fines are sold to debt collectors in this country who chance their arm with threatening letters

Sounds like a fixed penalty notice which isnt reportable to insurers but to be safe you can check with the insurers in question

We don't have an issue with paying the fine, it's just whether we need to declare it to our insurance company.

Insideinsurance has already answered that part of the question.

Have a good look at the letter you've received as it's almost certainly from a UK debt collector who have made their letter look like it has authority

    Is that strictly correct?

I thought some FPN's result in penalty points therefore are reportable to insurers.

No idea about Italian FPN's though.
  • If it has points then it is an Endorsable Fixed Penalty Notice and the endorsement aspect (ie points on license) does need to be declared. A pure fixed penalty notice has no endorsements so no need to declare.

I likewise dont know about the italian legal system or if there is even a concept of points for them. The OP only mentioned a fine however which by UK standards would not be reportable to the insurer but as per my belt and braces recommendation they should check with their insurers to be sure
