of you start the "task manager" (Right click on the task bar) and go to "Processes" tab

Do you see things like :
    Adobe Acrobat Update Service
    Java (TM) Update Scheduler

You might want to run a spyware/Anti-Virus scan to be sure and see what's running that should not be...

    Programmes & Features

Roxio is primarily for disc authoring, the Realtek thingy is likely to be your network and/or audio driver, Sony PMB is an odious multimedia organiser and Evernote is for note-taking.

    Shockwave is all but obsolete.

how much are you paying for this limited (crippled) service, probably get a new wireless router to make full use of laptops etc and a far better unlimited price elsewhere without the worry or expense of going over limits

machine is unlikely to run well with all that security software

With windows updates there are different settings to deal with them. One of them is "download updates but let me choose whether to install them" or you can select "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"
In addition (windows 7 for definite) you can set the time of when they install them. But obviously if your computer is turned off at that time, it can't do it. Plus it doesn't actually say when it downloads it, or if it downloads and installs at that particular time.

Perhaps, as you have a couple of updates, it's downloaded them, under the download now, and let me install later?

    None of the above.

    So I could uninstall these........

    £14.48 per month (Plusnet)
That's line rental, eve/weekend calls, and 10GB broadband.

TalkTalk Essentials seems to be £18.20 for 9 months and then £21.45 (but with unlimited downloads)
machine is unlikely to run well with all that security software
Have to admit it can be slow, but I've put much of that down to being several miles from the Exchange -no superhighway out here!

Didn't think spybot, or superantispyware ran in the background, only when a scan is run (but maybe I'm wrong there..)

Just double-checked. It's set to "Never check for updates" (which allows me to time my manual checks for when I want). Last time I checked was mid December.

Really appreciate all the ideas folks!

Leave the Realtek alone - drivers are very, very important!
