Self employed.Not worked due grief im a lone parent with disabled son.

Hey there, i'm seeking advice if anyone can help? I'm registered self employed have been for 3 years nearly..never made loads but could only do it part time..So still in reciept of working/child tax credit and HB.My little brother whom i was very close with died last jan ..ive not really worked since. the tax form i did in april was short online version and had done enough in previous months before his death to cover it.. Should i of told inland revenue gone and signed on ? i cant say as i gave it much thought 2 engulfed in grief to care even...woudnt be much better off either am aloud to this? i know people get compasionate leave from some jobs but i dont know if id fit in the catagory? many thanks

Yes, you should have declared this to HMRC, and you should do so immediately. No, this does not fit into the category of compassionate leave, that would account for a few weeks at most.0 -
as a lone parent. you would have had to work at least 16 hours a week to claim working tax credit.
the only jobs that are allowed to average the hours out are term time only jobs. so it would have made no difference that you worked more hours in the previous month.
when you had to renew your claim last april, why didnt you tell them you were no longer working?
i know first hand, the devastarubg effect that losing someone can have, but you really need to sort this out.
id suggext comtacting HMRC and explaining to them and coming to an agreement0
