  • when you enter the like and share comps there is no guarantee it is genuine, its a chance you take, they are open to cheating from both sides but people enter them in thousands, they get free publicity so I cant see anything changing!

Yes, what are the chances, eh?
I sometimes wonder whether small businesses are always going to pick a local person, but never say in their T&Cs.

  • i never enter like and share comps and i never have for 2 reasons.

    1. i only have one fb as per FB rules and its my proper fb - i do not want to spam my friends
    2. they can so easily be fake - as proven above!

i would encourage everyone to avoid them totally - even those running fair and square should still be running via an app.

tell the companies they should be running comps via an app and ask for terms and conditions. people soon freak when asked to give an official rule document.

report them to the chap mentioned a few posts above if you catch them out. - BEFORE you name them and shame them on fb. they close their pages because they know if someone reports them to an official body they will be held accountable. they will always turn into nasty trolls if you just post 'shame on you' comments. these are not nice people to do this in the first place!!! report them and get them caught out whilst all the proof is still public and accessible.

what angers me most is how occasional companies turn on people and call them jealous esp when in their heart of hearts they know they are the liar. makes my blood boil!

I never do FB like and shares any more if I can help it, for the main reason that I don't like spamming my friends' news feeds... however these recent posts about scams have made me even more wary of them and I will definitely avoid them like the plague now! I don't mind doing FB app competitions or sweepstakes.
There was one that raised my suspicions a while back for some weight loss place based in Dublin, they did a comp for an iPad and then sometime later published a pic of the winner collecting her iPad in person from the Dublin office, yeah like anyone from the UK ever had a chance to win that one!!!!

There seems to be more and more, - today lawsons, timber, building and fencing supplies announced the winner of the ipad mini competition and dispite the comp going on for weeks and thousands of likes and shares all over the country the winner lives in the same town. If I had the no how to do a bit more fishing, no doubt would uncover the owner related or something.

Did the 'winner' even share the page or any of the competition posts? I cannot seem to see anything on her profile...

Bah never mind, entry was via their website not Facebook.

I'm wary of what I enter, but I did enter a Windows Phone UK comp and have just got an email today saying that I won. It's an exclusive Hobbit cap apparently, but a win is a win :)
  • There's another discussion about a con on The Winners Circle regarding Bargain Factory's FB competition (can't post a link atm)

They were running a Twitter comp too which I warned people they looked iffy but at that stage it was a case of enter at your own risk etc ...

Anyway Bargain Factory have now removed the winning announcement from their page as it seems the winner may not exist. The same 'winner' also won a bra on another page also linked to The Bargain Factory.
Apparently it's being discussed on 'Conned by comps' but I'm not a member on there ...
  • i still say theres a shop near me holding fake competitions, but because its got a rude word in their title i cant post on here. i have reported it to IPM and ASA to look into it. ive been blocked when i questions the validity of its comps.
    Just about to give up!

    I've been Money Tipped!
A few years back a free local newspaper ran a comp to name the access road to a new housing estate. When in town a month or so later I popped into the newspaper office to discover who'd won but they didn't know so they took my details and said they'd investigate.

That evening I got a really nasty telephone call from the promoter who said the entries weren't of a sufficient standard and so the prize hadn't been awarded. However he would now award the prize of £100 of Marks and Spencer vouchers to a local charity. He then accused me of sour grapes, blew a raspberry and put the phone down in my face.

    Charming!

So there we have it. Loads of free publicity for the promoter and a prize that probably never existed. Makes you more wary in future.
