As we are the office and management part of the business unfortunately we do not have union representation.

The management can still join a union!
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

What a strange situation where a customer can dictate to a service supplier that they need to close a site down and relocate.

I'll make the assumption that the transport company has made the classic error of allowing 1 customer to supply it with more than 50% of it's business and is now at that customers mercy.

Why is that an error? say the company started off with 30 trucks and 3 contracts each needing 10 trucks to service them, company number one comes along with a large contract needing a further 30 trucks, are you saying that because two thirds of the work is with one contract they should knock it back?

No, but they should look to quote for more contracts to reduce their risk.

I used to work for a large HVAC manufacturer who, as part of the production process, fitted baffles to some units. These were purchased from a nearby company who made the mistake of not chasing further contracts elsewhere due to the level of work we generated for them.
Then one day we found a cheaper supplier elsewhere in the UK & immediately switched. 3 days later the original supplier closed-down as a result of losing the contract. In total (including those who worked for their contractors on other projects) over 250 people lost their jobs.

The company I am on assignment with at the moment is using it's size as a customer to force all our suppliers to reduce the price of the components they supply us. The end result is that one US-based supplier simply closed their doors & a Scottish based supplier has also now gone under.
