Admiral/Albany Assistance Car Hire

Options
Hi All,

I had an accident yesterday when someone went into the back of me at traffic lights. I have contacted my insurance company who have passed me onto Albany Assistance. They gave me 2 options either

1) Go through own insurance company, pay the excess once the car has been repaired

2) Go through Albany Assistance take the hire car and the current car away to repair

However i have read all the reviews about Abalany and how so many people have had problems with the Hire Agreements.

Would it be better to pay the excess and get the car repaired or to go through Albany?

Thanks in Advance :)

There is also option 3, claim directly off of the third party's insurance and they'll provide a hire car and deal with the repairs etc for you (or at least the vast majority of insurers will)
  • The pro's and con's.

    Option 1

You will have to pay the excess but this can be claimed back from the negligent insurer. You can either do this yourself or if you have legal expenses insurance they can do this for you.

Your insurer will try and 'steer' you to an approved repairer, as it will cheaper and more profitable for them if you do use their approved repairer. (watch channel 4 tonight at 8pm)

The approved repairer may also be obliged to use non genuine parts that are notorious for not fitting correctly.

    Option 2

Your insurer will receive a payment of £300 if you accept the services of Albany Assistance. They aren't really interested in the repair of your car as they make their money out of hiring you a like for like car. If you alllow them to choose the garage, they will send it to a garage that refers the most amount of hires. Albany do not have any standards when it comes to selecting repairers for their network.

Option 3 (as suggested by Inside Insurance)

If they accept liability and are willing to offer their services then it may appear that this is the best option. But remember the other sides insurer will only be interested in keeping the costs down for themselves.

I would insist my car was repaired by my choice of garage. If you don't have a garage in mind then contact the manufacturer/dealer for their nearest approved repairer or if you allow the insurance company to 'steer' you to an approved repairer, make sure you check them out.

    Admiral / Albany NIGHTMARE!

Let this be a lesson to all...

We are insured fully comprehensive, had a small bump that the third party was claiming as 'knock for knock, and Admiral suggested we bring in Albany as a way of avoiding paying my excess on a claim, a 'no fault' 'no hassle' solution to a 'knock for knock' dispute that has turned into a nightmare...

One year later Albany have not resolved it and have now passed the file to a firm of solicitors and we are now faced with the prospect of my daughter having to go to court to testify in the case.... this is an outcome we were never advised of by Admiral when they encouraged us to let Albany deal with it. We are fully comp!!

What was sold to us as a simple way to avoid any excess and retain our not claims has now escalated into a situation where my daughter will now have to go to court to testify. Ridiculous and not what we paid our premiums to Admiral for.

My advice to anyone where Admiral or any other insurer offers Albany as a simple way to 'sort it out free of charge' is DONT DO IT!

Now we are facing more stress and a day in court for my daughter, and I wish I had just paid the excess and moved on at the time.

Admiral Insurance's advice to us at the time was at best wrong and at worst downright misleading and designed no doubt to earn them a referral commission and avoid any cost on their part. (We are fully comprehensive)

    Admiral... SHAME ON YOU!
Albany.... So much for an easy solution, AVOID!

if anyone has any advice on how I can draw a line under this ridiculous process and avoid sending my daughter to court I would be very grateful.....

Did Albany arrange the repairs of your car and / or a credit hire car?

Is the court case to chase payment of the above?
