New tyres and the tyre labels law

After a pair of new front tyres for my focus, the tyres are size 225/4/18 been online doing a few checks and it seems to me that the more expensive tyres are no better under the new tyre labelling indicators then a lot of the cheaper tyres.
Infact found some fully fitted sailun tyres for £64 fitted each that are fuel rated 'b' , rain grip rated 'b' and noise level of 72db , these seem a bargain when i can go up to £200 each michelin that are fuel rated 'f', rain rated 'b' and 73 db noise.
In looking through i cant find a more expensive tyre that beat em, some are a tad quieter, but none are more fuel efficient infact most are a lot worse and non are better in rain.
Think im going to save myself a fair bit of wonga and get the cheap tyres
Plenty of decent midrange tyres out there: Kumho, Falken etc.
Wouldn't bother going for unknown Chinese ditchfinders when you can pick up a good tyre for only a little more.
Remember, there tyres are the only thing keeping your car on the road. I'm not saying splash out on Michelin Pilot Sports, but when conditions worsen/emergency braking is required you'd be glad you didn't get the budget ones.0 -
Yes sorry was a typo meant to say 40, but you are wrong tho not an ST just a 1.8 titanium that happens to have the handling package on it that gives it 18" wheels
Please don't!
From the tyre size which you quoted (incorrectly because an aspect ratio of "4" is incredibly low profile;)), you are driving a Focus ST (?), a high performance hatch which needs top quality brakes and tyres, in order that it steers and stops efficiently.0 -
If you look on www.mytyres.co.uk many of the tyres listed on there have been rated by consumers on tyretest.com. I've found that these ratings, while not scientifically produced, give a very good idea of the performance of the tyre. I've not been disapointed yet when picking a tyre using this as a primary source of info.0

So the wet rating test is just braking in a straight line on a wet surface. That tells you nothing of how the car will corner in the wet nor cope with aquaplaning both on straights and bends.
At least the Auto Express tests do test those.
And going back to the OPs original post where they say about the Michelins being a F rating for economy. There's a reason for that - they're sticky and grip to the road better.0 -
Khumo for me. Fairly budget brand but grip well. Dont last as long but for the price thats the trade off.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

Auto Express (GB) Auto Bild (D) and Auto Plus (F) tyre tests are great. Very informative. They have the budget (their titles are sold across Europe) and they really go for it.At least the Auto Express tests do test those.
Probably the most scientific tyre tests are conducted by ADAC, and their results are usually very close to Auto Express."Retail is for suckers"
