Recover files on Matsui MP3

Is there anything that can be done to recover documents saved on a USB?
Thing is, the music files play no problem. All the document files I have backed up on it (and there are loads!), that I would like to access at home are causing any PC I use to freeze!
The USB is recognised and the files are displayed in Explorer, but cannot be copied. Some can be opened but cannot be saved anywhere else - so I'm at a loss what to do! I didn't purchase it long ago - so it's a real bummer!
I haven't got another USB with a large enough capacity (2gb) to download the original files again.
Hope someone can help.

You could try restoring them with a dedicated utility.
For example, Recuva is free:
