Unfounded Eon Debt?
Hi All,
I am after some advice on a pre-payment gas and electric meter I had at a previous house (I left in September 2012)
I have just received 2 letters from a debt collecting agency saying I owe over £600 on the electric meter and over £100 on the gas meter. I did inform Eon that I was moving and gave them final meter readings.
As I told them I was leaving and I was on a pre-payment meter I don't understand how I can owe this money and what is the best form of action now?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ignore them until they take further action, then defend it.
Or send them a notice that the debt is denied outright.Be happy...;)0 -

Was there any debt loaded to the meters?
If not, then follow spacey2012's advice. Have you contacted Eon, to ask them their side of the story?0 -
Hi,
There was actually credit on both meters! (approx £15 on the electric and £10 on the gas)0 -
sounds like standing charge debtDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Hi bubba4480
A few things could be happening here.
Do you know why the prepayment meter was fitted in the first place? Was it to collect a debt from a previous credit account?
Did you inherit the meter when you moved in?
Once an account closes, if debt is still on the meter, we'll look to recover the remaining balance.
However, if the meter was already there when you moved in, it's possible a debt belonging to a previous occupant may have been left on the meter.
Did you contact us when you took over responsibility for the old property? If you did, any existing debt should've been cleared down.
One thing to be aware of, if there was debt belonging to a previous occupant still on the meter, you'll have been repaying this through the meter.
If you have, we'll need to work out how much extra you've paid and refund it.
Another thought; have a look at your statements. Are all the payments you made correctly recorded?
Have you always used the same key/card to top up?
I've known instances where using the wrong key/card means payments hit the wrong account. If this has happened, we'll need to find your payments and re-allocate to your account. Any receipts you may still have will help here.
Did you change supplier to us whilst at the property? If you did, were you still using the old suppliers card/key?
If this has happened, your payments will have continued to go to the old supplier. Again, we'll need to find the payments and re-allocate to your account. This isn't a problem, though, as there's an industry wide mechanism to do this.
Sorry for all the questions but there are a few possibilities to look at. I'd talk to one of our specialist Prepayment teams. They'll be able to advise exactly where the outstanding balances come from.
Hope this is useful bubba. Give me a shout if you need any more info as happy to help.
