best choice
Would appreciate help in making a decision. Retiring soon, state pension only. I can either keep my 3 ltr sport jag, very good condition, has cost little in repairs past 6 years, or I can sell and buy a 1yr old audi A3 (no other car calls to me) - I want to make best choice to keep my costs down, and I do need a car. Could use readers experience comments and advice, thanks.

Have you actually had a state pension forecast to see what your income would be, you may be eligible for 2nd State pension and also pension credit.
Are you actually wanting to keep the car.
If so, work out all your incomings and outgoings and then work from there.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
As your thread has dropped down the Old Style board I've moved it over to the motoring board where you should get more replies.

How many miles do you think you will do?
How many miles/age and which Jag (XJ sport?)
The Jag will sup fuel but not that important if you do low milage.
The Jag will also maintain value better, how well depending which one.
(My Dad has a 6.0 V12 in his garage but its worth peanuts... but might actually appreciate in value.)
You might be able to trade the Jag later as a 1yr old Audi A3 will start losing value straight away.... even if you do low milage.0 -
Buy a 3 year old car for much less. And it will lose a lot less value.
If your looking at saving money, Is spending £10 - 15k on a 1 year old car wise? It may only be worth £5k in 3 years.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
thankyou for comments.
I have now been made to realise the actual possible cost of the proposed audi - its high, probably too high for me, it seems I didnt realise exactly how costly the audi is. It would render me penniless, and being sensible, i cant afford it, as i do need other things, even though i am downsizing home/car etc etc these actions still cost.
I have done sums, I know how much pension/credits I will have. I will not be rich, roughly how much i will have as a nest egg will depend basically on which car I keep or buy.
I have the chance of buying a small fiat, 1.1 - 4yrs old, good condition, low mileage (its family so i can trust) I am not keen on the vehicle, (pride probably) but i can purchase it for less than 4k, I would then sell the jag and hopefully still have a few bob to take into my dotage.
ps whatever car I take into my retirement, must last me until i no longer wish to drive, and hopefully not cost too much to keep on the road..
Any comments on this will be gratefully received/ cheers!! :T0 -
Generally speaking, Fiat's aren't reliable cars. Of course, some people have had very good experiences with them but on reliabilty surveys they often come out near the bottom.
Have a look at a 3 year-old supermini (around a Fiesta/Polo size), if you find one at a good price, it will cost less to run and something like a Polo should be reliable. Will also probably better to drive than the 1.1 l Fiat.0 -
Look at Skodas too0

Only that my mum has said that 3x now!
You have a world of options but they all involve compromise.
As I asked, what Jag is it? If its likely to appreciate in value then why not hold onto it for now?
The 1yr old anything is a bad idea... if the plan is to last you until you no longer drive! What ever you get you can't guarantee what it will be like in 5 or 10 years! OK so the Audi has a good chance of being Ok in 10 yrs but who knows for certain. Better either continue with tha Jag (depending what its worth and what it might be worth in 5 yrs) or get a 4 yr old fiat and hope it lasts another 5 but with enough to replace it if something unexpected happens?
If your downsizing home etc. then if the Jag is in good order why not keep it until you settle other items? Once you get the idea of the 1yr old audi out of your head you will probably see a lot clearer

Get an auto (just in case) but a low milage Saab diesel should have another 200,000 miles left in her!
Reasonable MPG
Not embarrassing to be seen in after Jag
