What on earth is the relevance in that reply!

There's a difference between owning your home and renting.

A home owner is responsible for the maintenance of their home.

They brought their house years ago, why have a go at them for buying it! They were just asking if they could get help to fix door. They are in their 70's!!

A door is rarely something that fails without a good deal of neglect, I think was the point, and that they should have put aside money to maintain it.

However, in practice, things aren't always this simple.

OP - living at home, your outgoings will be limited... could you help them to fund the repair?

If they really are living so close to the edge that they cannot afford this repair then they need to seriously consider selling up to downsize or move into rented accommodation.

can't help with your specific issue but it might be worth your parents going to either CAB or Age UK for help & advice about whether they are getting all the benefits they are entitled to.
