White cats & skin cancer...

Hi all, I would be interested to hear from anyone who has experience of their cat losing their ears to skin cancer.
Sadly my 3 year old pure white cat has developed a skin cancer and is having the top of both ears removed on Friday :(
Dreading taking her in.....
Thank you

I don't have any personal experience , but mine has one white ear and I now put sun-screen on in the summer.

If it helps any I was funnily enough watching a program day before yesterday with this exact operation on. The cats ears in question were Really bad, and to look at the poor thing from the start you wondered how on earth they were going to do it.

However the op went well , I would say be prepared for your kitty not to look good , it did look awful at first , but was fine in the end.

I think it may be a post you made elsewhere about this and that he/she will be indoor after this ? Try not to worry too much (stupid thing to say really I know) and fingers crossed for friday.

Hope that's of some if only a little help.

Just read your post again.....the cat I was talking about had the whole of the outer ears removed not the tips. I'm sure yours will be fine after recovery.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

I'm sorry for your puss! I'm sure she'll come through it fine though, and soon you won't even notice a difference in her. *hugs*

We've had two white cats since 1998 (now just one white cat as the other was PTS before Christmas :( not cancer) and despite our best efforts we could never get them to keep suncreme on their ears, they'd always wash it off. I guess we were pretty lucky that they never got anything from it.

  • Just wanted to wish Puss all the best for her op on Friday..... sure it'll go well

Not got experience of this with a cat but one of our donkeys was white and it was a constant battle in the summer trying to keep his nose (really delicate pink skin) safe from the sun ...

  • Thank you all for the kind words. She is unlucky as 3 is young for skin cancer but hopefully caught in time so wont spread now, although high risk of it returning later in life. I heeded all the warnings and used sun block as often as I could but now i have seen advice that white cats should always stay indoors!

Our two were/are outdoor cats (out when they wanted) and like I said, we never had a problem with them - I have a friend who also has three white ones and they're allowed out and never got burnt at all as well. I guess it's luck? IDK. I would keep her in during the day time now though.
