So we bought a Windows 8 laptop for Christmas thinking it was a natural and painless upgrade. All I want to do is download some familiar programs off the internet, DVD ripper and other utilities. The files download but they will not open or install. The pop up for do you want to give "program" access, but nothing happens.
This is really frustrating, this is second day trying to get thios sorted and nothing. Flash plug in, which I need for some sites (it is NOT pre-installed in the sense that you can use it when browsing ie BBC iplayer, youtube) is also not installed and nor is google chrome. Why so difficult?

This doesn't help me I'm afraid. For some reason my computer will not act on any downloads. They show up in "downloads" but they will not open or install. Is there a setting that needs to be changed to allow them to work? Its really not user friendly and there is absolutely no help on the Microsoft or any other site. There isn't even a way to download Windows Media Player!0

I had the same problem with my Nephews PC over christmas - he just couldn't get anything to install. It would download but not install.
When I got across there, it had the dreaded piece of !!!! Norton on it. I un-installed that and re-activated windows defender. I could then install everything he wanted.
Is Norton installed on yours?0 -
and also check in Control Panel -> User accounts and ensure you are an 'Administrator' rather than a 'standard' user.0

Good thinking, McAfee was preinstalled on a Wiin8 machine I bought and completely screwed up the network connectivity, once uninstalled, cleaned up and Windows defender activated the machine worked fine.
