New Brakes

One of my rear breaks is binding. They are rusty.
A year and a half ago I had the front ones replaced. It costs me £140 at a local garage. How much would it cost now?
I'm now in a different area now and don't know where to take my car. Don't want to get ripped off but I don't wanna pay fortune.
Where do I go? Will a national chain of garages cost lot more than a local one?

In general, a good independent will probably be cheaper, and less interested in flogging you extra stuff - you could try here to see if there's a garage near you - http://www.goodgaragescheme.co.uk/

Bear in mind, the binding could indicate other components are worn - eg caliper (disc brakes) - might need extra work freeing it off or replacing the caliper if it's seized.

Try ringing a few garages to get a feel for the cost?

Sticky handbrake cable or caliper on the rear, So probably a lot more than the front.

    Probably....

The national chains are there to get as much money from you as possible but that doesn't make every centre manager a ba*****

A while ago I got KF pads and disks.... the pads are guaranteed for the life of the car but the small print says ... so long as you replace the other parts they say need replacing.... (say not need)....

Having done this I had a free pad change in our then local KF.... the pads are the cheapest possible and not designed to last!

I then had a personal emergency (my kid was in intensive care in St Thomas's for 3 weeks then on the ward )...
During this time my calliper locked on......
I knew I was damaging the car but really had no time to fix it!

Eventually, crisis over I took it back to KF and the manager charged me for a calliper but not the new pads (needed again) and replaced the disk under guarantee (I would have not had much of a leg to stand on had they tried to wriggle out of the guarantee when I'd driven with the calliper locked on and smoke coming from the disk!)

In other words the nice manager of KF in Sunbury didn't enforce everything possible!

I since took the worn pads to KF in Woking.... apart from the general lack of any organisation (mixing cars up) they were already looking up new disks before bothering to check!

In retrospect, nice as the guy in Sunbury was I'll get them done elsewhere from now on..... you get the cheapest parts fitted then are at their mercy as to if they will change the pads without telling you they won't do it under guarantee unless you pay for the far more expensive disks.

My local Indy saw the pads and remarked they were about £10 cheaper all round than a better make would last a lot longer and cost the same labour to fit!
