Government survey on growing your own fruit and vegetables.

nike.gif I found the following information very interesting, and we plotters seem to be very keen on our beans!!
A recent Government survey shows that the proportion of home back garden or allotment grown fruit and vegetables, has almost doubled in the last four years. This is likely to be due to the rapidly rising cost of shop bought fruit and vegetables, as well as the various TV programs. The proportion of different fruit and vegetables that are now home grown, is surprisingly large. Beans 33%, Potatoes 7%, Tomatoes 4%, Apples 9%, Soft fruit 10%, giving an overall figure of 5% for fruit and vegetables that are home grown. Interestingly, about 46% of growers on allotments are women.

I wonder how many have grown courgettes, panicked at the sheer quantity produced, and vowed never to grow them again. Or is it just me?

It certainly wasn't anyone in this house! We grew one courgette plant last year and it failed miserably.

Yes, it was the same with mine and a neighbour's also. Everything was a mess last year.

Yep 3 courgette plants here, one just died and got perhaps 5 or 6 from the other 2 before they gave up the ghost.

Wish I had done more beans tho as they seemed to do well lol.

  • My courgettes did fantastically well last year. I wondered originally why my yellows grew more then my green until I cut down my corn and found a massive marrow hidden there!
