Purple Sprouting Broccolli

It's a good plant to grow but in the summer months you have to keep a contant watch out for caterpillars. If they do nibble your leaves, don't despair as even if they end up looking like lace doilies, they will sproud fresh edible young leaves over the winter and next spring. Make sure they are planted very deeply as winter winds tend to blow them loose in the soil and then they might need anchoring with sticks. You need a fair amount of space to grow this plant as it will need to stay in situ until next March/April which the best new pickings start to sprout.0

My broccolli has really grown well, first time i grew it from seed, looked today for the first time in ages and it's plastered in yellow and black stripey caterpillars. There are so many! Not sure what to do for the best, leave them be or exterminate them! I can't pick them off as i'm too much of a wimp!!!
what will get rid of them?Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless. ~ Mother Teresa0 -
Sounds like the caterpillars of the Large Cabbage White - very common on brassicas! Best option, on a very regular basis, is to pick them off or get someone to do it for you, if you want to remain organic and keep your true Broccoli!I'm mad!!!! :rotfl::jand celebrating everyday every year!!!0

I grow my brassicas under fleece all year round for this reason and it does seem to work in keeping the cabbage whites off.3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!

My PS has white flowers on it - I am guessing this is not good! The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0

The caterpillars are well worth collecting.
Mix up a light batter with self-raising flour, eggs and a little beer. Dip the little fellows in it. (If you put them in the fridge the night before they won't wiggle so much.) Then deep fry for about 30 seconds. Dry on some kitchen paper and serve with a chili dipping sauce. I call it Prawn Tempura MSE Style, the family love it.
Just kidding.

There are loads of them and they've all had babies and their babies have also had babies too!

Don't give up on them yet. My psb were completely stripped by pigeons last autumn. I still got a good crop come spring.0
