NatWest defaulted amount - help please!

Back in May 2008 I let Natwest know that I was having financial difficulties as I had a £500 overdraft and the account was accruing a lot of interest. After various letters back and forth, Natwest informed me that my account had been written off their system for the amount of £997 in 2010. I have recently decided to sort out my debt with them once and for all, but am confused by the letter!
It states that my debt will be wiped after 6 years, so is that counted from the first issues in 2008 or when the account defaulted in 2010? If you contact them within those 6 years (even just seeing where you stand in regards to excessive charges), will they then not wipe the debt after 6 years if they can see you have tried to rectify the issue?
Also, if I start off a payment plan with them, will the default not come off of my credit score until it's finalised?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm just terribly confused by their letter and am completely new to this! Thanks in advance for your help and advice

Take your letter down to your local Citizens Advice Bureau and ask them.0

defaults stay for 6 years, even once this drops off you still owe the debt. But before the 6 years they can then get a ccj which can extend for a further 6Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Thanks for your advice!
I think I might head to the citizens advice bureau and see what they say.0 -
