have you just moved in with the partner who held an account with npower?

my guess is yes, and she has a debt with them
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

No. The actual situation is that we're both in the process of moving in, and both our names were supplied to npower and others by the former occupants. Neither of us had an account with any energy supplier prior to this.

We had a similar issue with the water company. We received a welcome letter from them - in joint names - requesting a whole plethora of personal and property-related information; in the bin it went. They don't need to know!

Not as easy as you might think, unless you give it to them on a plate.

Electoral roll - basic only. No DoB

Credit Reference Search - they need DoB and previous address to carry one out. They could obtain it later - if they supply account data to the CRA - but if they didn't have it in the first place and obtained it in that manner they would be in breach of DP law.

Marketing Data Search - Anyone stupid enough to give out personal details to these people deserve all they get - identity theft and the rest of it.

Land registry - I don't actually know whether they have sensitive personal details of property owners. I've a feeling they may try to collect NI numbers. In any event, any sensitive stuff is not publicly available

The land register will record the full names of the registered owners and an 'address for service', i.e. postal/email/care of address(es). NI details are not collected or recorded.

1st point.. with npower and most SAP using companies you have to answer 2 account identification questions (Address/acc number etc) to ID the correct account, THEN at least 2 verification question that are used to confirm account holders ID. So you say you were told to ring back after 1 question? unlikley as their policy is 2 strikes and out not one.

2nd point I really love chimps who whine about DPA as they are normally the kinds of "MORON" who are too thick to have their details ready for dpa questioning but would be the first in the queue at a solisitors to claim if their info was given out to anyone asking for it due to a lack of dpa.

We live in a world where electronic fraud is more likely than a good old fashioned mugging so either move with it or move to a cave.
