Any tips re. improved wireless access with ipod 5 touch?

I have had the above for about a week. I have no problem with wireless access at home. I have tried in 3-4 other places, mostly cafes. I successfully registered at Costa Coffee. In 2 branches it worked well but today I couldn't get any email or access to safari. The wireless symbol was showing but was flickering. Then i got a message that there was a server problem. Perhaps it was just a Costa problem? i tried moving away from the door and closer to the counter but it did not improve.

Is the ipod touch supposed to be able to access the signal in tube stations. Someone previously told me that it wasn't but mine seemed to detect a signal for a short time.
