I should think that it is very doubtful that you will get a grant for driving lessons. Your Son is only on the lower rate, it has got to be the highest rate, before you can even get a blue badge, never mind lessons. I know that mobility did at one time give a grant for the disabled person to learn to drive. But I have never heard about the carer. Also because you are on the lower rate, it will be you that will have to buy the car, tax, insure and MOT it. Mobility will only offer help with the higher rate.

    That's Incorrect.

HRM is no passport to getting a blue badge & it's entirely possible to obtain one without getting ANY mobility component of DLA.

Family Fund, as Marleyboy states, still give assistance in taking driving lessons but i understand it now means the application is valid for a 2 year period, not 1.

It's MoTability that do the contract hire scheme, for which you will need to be on HRM.

Hope that clears up any confusion :)

i REALLY CAN NOT UNDERSTAND A WORD YOU HAVE WRITTEN,
I am not takling about the blue badges you can get from the council or doctors, I am talking about your right to automatically get a badge if you are on HRM.

Secondly it was asked if a grant can be given through motability, which i answered.

And thirdly what the hell does this mean

The question was about motability, You have created even m ore confusion .

I am my sons carer, he is only a child but can not go on public transport due to his dissability, it's dangerous for himself and to other passengers as he will try to harm himself and other people if anybody he doesn't know comes near him, now i heard of a grant to help me with driving lessons for carers to enable me to to take my son (and 2 other children) out of the house, at the moment we can not go anywhere with him that involves a bus or a train etc. He is on highest rate carers allowance and lowest rate mobility allowance.
Does anybody know if this grant exists and if so would i qualify for it and where i can apply for it?
    Thank you
I applaud your motives but the one thing that worries me here is that if you and your family are in a vehicle and and you are slowed up or stopped in a town with a myriad of people walking along the pavements very close to the vehicle, what effect will this have on your son? How will you be able to cope if he starts harming himself?

Do you have a friend that he knows and is comfortable with who has a car to go for a trial drive to see whether the idea is viable?

    Completely incorrect I'm afraid.

Family Fund still do pay out for driving lessons for a carer of a disabled child (even on the lower rate) http://www.familyfund.org.uk/sites/default/files/Driving%20lessons%20leaflet.pdf

Your only obligation is that you hold a provisional driving licence and care for a child with a disability.

It wont buy you a car or get you a blue badge, but it will get you a full driving licence (assuming you pass).

I should add to save your confusion, that the Family Fund is NOT connected in any way with Mobility, the question in hand WAS about the Family Fund and NOT Mobility. ;)

Hi Wishing 5 - You mentioned your son has a disability, you do not have to answer this if u dont want to, but is he on the Autistic Spectrum?

The reason I ask about his disability is because it will determine whether he is classed as 'a child in need' ( in need here refers to a child who may be in need of services from the Local Authority). If he is then u should have an allocated social worker and they should review this as it clearly is not meeting his/families needs. In a previous LA i worked with the LA provided funding for families for transport (not driving lessons - this may have been cos all the families we worked with were drivers).

I think the best person to ask is the social worker (assuming u have one). Support should be available in any care plans. If not mention it in his statutory review. Any further advice ask me and I will try and help.

    Regards
  • Hi, I know this was posted ages ago but I thought I best warn you that Family Fund no longer fund driving lessons.

How do I know? Because I applied and was told I was eligible for help but that they no longer fund driving lesson due to rising costs for driving lessons. Which I thought was kind of the point seeing as it can be expensive and unreachable for most families now never mind those that care for disabled child.

This has really annoyed me and the nursing hospital team that work with my son and I.

Have you considered asking a driving instructor if they know who else might make grants? If the FF have stopped, something else may have emerged to take some of its place.

Yes, unfortunately the previous government was overly generous with free money for driving lessons and all sorts, so now, there is no money left for those who really need it. Blame Blair and Brown for blowing all the money whilst it was there.

If his mobility issues are that poor I would have thought that he would be entitled to High Mobility of DLA.
Motability would then fund the lessons because by getting that allowance you have proved that he needs to have accessible transport.
