In all my 26 years or so in tax, I have never entered a figure in here. I imagine it will increase the prospect of an enquiry, simply by virtue of the fact that there is any entry in this section. An honest mistake and an explanation should put an end to it!

By the way, there is no problem whatsoever in amending your return. Simply log in and choose this option!

Nomunnofun - I would really appreciate your thoughts on this: I took your advice and logged back in to amend my return. This is a copy of the pages that come up under tax reliefs and benefits:
Taxable benefits and expenses for my employment:

    Company cars and vans:£
Fuel for company cars and vans:£
    Private medical and dental insurance:£
Vouchers, credit cards and excess mileage allowance:£
Goods and other assets provided by your employer:£
    Accommodation provided by your employer:£
Other benefits (including interest-free and low interest loans):£
Expenses payments received and balancing charges:£

Then other tax reliefs and benefits:

You have said that you want to claim other tax reliefs and deductions in the tax year 2011-12. Please complete the following questions.

Seafarers' Earnings Deduction. Enter the total amount:£
    Name of ship(s):

Foreign earnings not taxable in the UK:£
Foreign tax for which tax credit relief not claimed:£
Exempt employers' contributions to an overseas pension scheme:£

Subscriptions for Venture Capital Trust shares. Enter the amount on which relief is claimed:£
Subscriptions for shares under the Enterprise Investment Scheme. Enter the amount on which relief is claimed:£
Please provide more information about your subscriptions for shares under the Enterprise Investment Scheme:
Community Investment Tax Relief. Enter the amount on which relief is claimed:£
UK royalties and annual payments made:£
Qualifying loan interest payable in the year:£
Post-cessation expenses and certain other losses:£
Maintenance payments (max £2,800) only if you or your former spouse or civil partner were born before 6 April 1935:£
Payments to a trade union etc for death benefits. Enter half the amount paid (max £100):£
Relief claimed for employer's compulsory widow's, widower's or orphan's benefit scheme (max £20):£
Relief claimed on a qualifying distribution on the redemption of bonus shares or securities:£

And I STILL cant see professional subscriptions argh!!!!

You still appear not to have said yes to the box -

Do you wish to claim any employment expenses or capital allowances while working for ????

You do appear to have said 'Yes' to the box

Have you received any taxable benefits and expense payments from ?????

    which is wrong.

You need to go into the section 'Amend income from ????' and proceed.

Thank you soooo much!! I found it. Am feeling like a very thick person right now. I missed the employment expenses box completely but have now amended my return and saved about £100 on my tax bill.
I am loving you very much nomunnofun right now. May the karma Gods smile on you! xx
