Thanks for speedy reply. Have tried a few of the numbers you suggest but to no avail. Always seem to be directed to Indian chap who say they are the support for Dell and want to charge me for their services, even though I explain that it's a new computer and it's not my fault.

The spec included Wi-fi and Dell wireless connection however despite numerous attempts the computer doesn't recognise my home or for that matter any wireless router. Also, the keyboard is configured in a confusing way (ie @ appears as ") and finally, I cant seem to adjust the settings in this new Windows8 fomat.

    Any help gratefully received.

Oh, It's not alienware is it? Just this sounds very similar to this problem here. Maybe there is a batch problem if it were Alienware, perhaps you should watch that thread and see how they're doing with getting contact over dell and a refund/repair etc

Edited to add, after seeing new info post,

Can you contact dell via their sales line and ask to be put to tehnical support, then demand to speak to a manager?

I'm guessing you have tried to use the wifi elsewhere with someone elses connection? (your own wifi is definitely working as well?

The keys sounds like it's some stupid version of sticky keys, that probably have been activated, but on windows 8 not sure where to change. A google search should bring up info for you to try to change it and see if that fixes it. Otherwise check the keyboard location is set to UK.

    laptop or desktop, which model?

keyboard problem is probably the regional settings for the keyboard. What is the symbol above the 3 key, a pound? and if you press shift 3, what comes on screen?

wireless, assuming the adapter is turned on (is the indicator lit), is probably fixable, post more details.

    what settings need adjusting.

there is a bracknell number amongst the numbers, but Dell support is offshored.

  • The key issue is just the map - you've got it configured as a US keyboard; change it to UK.

As above, open the desktop, mouse over to botton left corner, right click on the start menu click on control panel the find region.
Or from start screen start typing region and select the relavent app.

If you need to set up wireless type wireless within the start screen, and select the option required.

Would of helped if, as above , you told us the model of PC.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

You cannot return it for a refund just because of a couple of minor issues with the configuration and your unfamiliarity with W8. You are entitled to such support as the warranty you purchased offers, that is more than likely to be an overseas-based support line. They will not assist with any issues relating to 3rd party software.
If you have issues with wireless connectivity, then your ISP is better equipped to assist you (unless of course it's Horange).

Maggie, is the wireless actually switched on? Some models have a switch on the front/side.

Is it picking up any wireless networks at all and if so, what happens when you try to connect?

Sounds like something simple like this.
