Travel insurance after you have left home?

Please could someone offer any advice or experience of the following?
My son and his friends have gone travelling for a couple of years, to Australasia.
I understand the UK has reciprocal healthcare arrangements with our antipodean cousins.
They have now decided to take a break from Australia and have moved onto South East Asia (Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam etc.,) for a few months.
It transpires that not one of them have bothered to take out travel insurance and one of them, following a traffic accident, has already incurred a hospital bill of over £10,000 for daddy to pay
Another has had all his belongings, including iPad, money and even his passport, stolen.
So, I want to get my lad some travel insurance to cover for the next few months.
Is this possible?
Does anyone have any recommendations for honest and competitive insurance providers?
Many thanks.

All mainstream companies require that insurance is taken out before departure from the UK.
There are a couple of companies that will provide cover once travel has commenced, but they are more expensive

I think Globelink may be another one, but I don't know anything about them except that someone kept spamming on here about them last year.0
