I use it for the gadget insurance and the ID protection. I have an iPhone and an iPad and on they cost between £5 and £10's each to insure for use out of the home so £9.50 a month seemed ok. Plus I'm forever losing my purse and my keys so the ID protection who's name I can't remember now, helps if I lose things by contacting the other card companies.

Or keep all lost stolen no's in your phone... Clearly you dont have a issue losing that.

ID protection is a waste of time and money.

I-phone/pad. What extra cover do you get over what you might have on your house ins.

It's worth it even for the iPad/iPhone insurance. I don't get it on house insurance as I rent but my contents insurance only covers the gadgets while they are in my flat.

Anyway, it is only one month I have gone over by £4 so, again, do not feel that cancelling insurance that insures my items outside of the home is necessary. I like the peace of mind that I get from having my phone and iPad insured. Oh, and I do have problems with my phone as well as I have also lost that before but......as I had insurance...... It was replaced at a cost of £50.

But those debts were accrued years ago an I pay a significant amount to them and have plans in place to clear them by the end of this year. I have paid £15k towards paying off debt in the last 6 years and considering I only earn £10k a year that's actually been very hard work so, yes, I have made one extravagant purchase but seeing as I need a laptop for my studies anyway it wasn't a frivolous purchase.

    What did the iPad cost?

I bought my mum a good spec laptop for her Christmas last year, it cost £370. Could have got one that would have fulfilled it's purpose for much less. iPad the cheapest choice for you? Maybe not.

You may have done well to pay down your debts a bit from past mistakes, but still going out and buying things like iPhone/iPad when you have large debts suggests that the lesson hasn't been learnt yet.

Anyway, just had the call back from them and, panic over, I explained I am getting my student loan on the 14th but that my OH would happily put in £5 if it would avoid charges. They said I have not yet accrued any charges but normally they would have started charging me tomorrow but as I am getting money on the 14th they are happy not to charge me on this ocassion. So happy and thank you to everyone who has helped. It's amazing how much a 3 minute phone call can change your mood.
And three cheers for the Co-op bank being lenient and helpful. I don't think this story would have had such a happy ending had the bank in question been Santander.

have to say they've always been brilliant with me. DS has just had a minor problem and I made him phone them and - woot! Charge lifted!

Isn't there some FSA rule about buffer zones, or has that not come in yet?

I've not read the whole thread.

However have you just thought about asking the bank to refund the charges, depending on your circumstances. If your a repeat offender then they are more than likely say no.

The days when £4 becomes a significant amount of money is the day I would worry.

I'm amazed that the Co-Op will call you for £4.00. It must cost them more than that to make the call.

They didn't really call about £4, they called because somebody had gone over their agreed overdraft

    You are missing the point.

The OP couldn't live within their mean, so got an overdraft.

Now the OP cannot live within their overdraft, so goes over it.

    Can you see the trend?

It's in the OP's own interest that somebody is putting their foot down and shaking things up a bit. For instance, they could stop £4 short of their overdraft limit, rather than begging for forgiveness if they went over. If they make a habit of going over it, they could soon get a very rude awakening because the bank might well call in the entire overdraft.
