Neither statement is totally accurate (politicians would call them 'economical with the truth').

BT will charge you £1.75/month (£5.25/quarter) for Caller Display if you don't make 2 chargeable calls per month (if you're billed monthly) or 6 chargeable calls per quarter (if you're billed quarterly).

Similarly, BT will charge you £1/month (£3/quarter) for 1571 if you don't make 2 chargeable calls per month (if you're billed monthly) or 6 chargeable calls per quarter (if you're billed quarterly).

So, that's either 2 x 5½p calls (11p) or 6 x 5½p calls (33p) if you make sure those calls are evening or weekend calls to UK 01/02 numbers and are less than an hour. These can be the same 2 (or 6) calls.

In summary, the cost of both (not each) is 33p per quarter (not £4).

    But PLEASE don't use 1571.

BTW, £10.99/month is 1p less (or 49p more if you take paper-free billing into account) than BT.

And yes, I'll say it again. Leave your line rental with BT!

Please see the third link (the 'DUMP 1571' one) in my signature below for reasons for my aversion to 1571!

You can turn 1571 off yourself if you have online management of your account but it should be possible to do it verbally by calling 0800 800 150.

You could, of course, just dial a 1280 prefix on those 2 (or 6) calls to avoid the charges.

yes you can however if you check the uk callchecker you will see that 18185 (sistert company to 1899) will just edge out 1899 for cheaper calls overall. I was signed with both and currently use 18185 now instead of 1899 and 18185
    cheers

So... being charged for 1571 is a bit nasty by BT. Should I be moving over to their offer of 10.99 line rental (inc vat I believe), will this affect the 1571 service? Anything else I should know? (i.e. should I do it?)

Providing you put 2 E&W geographical calls a month through BT cost 11p ,they will provide both 1571(If you really must:D) and Caller Display.

Where as Primus will charge you charge 56p a month for the two. So your be paying over £5 a year more with Primus

Also Bt line rental (online billing) is cheaper at £10.75p a month . Primus is £10.99p a month

Its not considered to be a good idea to move your line rental from BT anyway.;)
