Hedgehogs...

My dogs have just found one in the woods, I carried it home & it's happily snacking on some roast chicken.
Is the warm weather disturbing them? I've seen a couple squashed on the nearby road, they shouldn't be up & about 'till early spring.

Aww, how cute (the one eating chicken, not the ones squashed on the road)

I saw a small-ish one in the garden last saturday night, but when I went outside for a closer look it had disappeared into the undergrowth.
I also wondered if it's the mild weather affecting their routine.0 -
Hedgehogs do wake up several times during hibernation.
Its good news he is eating, but do give him water to drink too
If you have some weighing scales at home, see if he weighs at least 600g as this is the minimum weight he should be to successfully continue his hibernation (I think its more than 600g for adults) You can then telephone your nearest Hedgehog Rescue with that information and they will advise you what to do. They might ask you to bring him in so they can overwinter him.
Hedgehogs are easily stressed little creatures, so try and keep him somewhere nice and quite where he will get minimum disturbance, and put something in his box he can bury into, like some straw etc. plus some food and water. Some days I wake up Grumpy ... Other days I let him lie in.0 -

def call the BHS for advice, i did when i found a little hog in august which was out in the garden but not moving one lunchtime. it was taken in by a carer and was very underweight, so she looked after it til it was better and bigger.Cats don't have owners - they have staff!!

I rescued one in early November. Took it to Animals in Need. They advised to feed mashed up puppy food and NEVER feed any dairy products. They can have goats milk though.it's nice to be important but more important to be nice!! :kisses3:0

Actually no they can't have goats milk. When they are very small in an emergency maybe but it is not good for them at any age.Only the proper rearing milk substitute .
For more help and advice this is the best site on the internet of which i am a member having helped out at a hedgehog rescue.

He/She weighs about 750g & must have eaten it's own bodyweight overnight
Not having a cat I had to go to the shop & buy a can of food, sucker or what :rotfl:He ate all my chicken!
He seems healthy enough so I think I'll wait 'till it's dark, feed him & take him back to the woods, hopefully he'll be ok.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Slightly off topic, but here's a hedgehog that I adopted whilst living in Mauritania. In the picture, he is eating his favourite meal of raw chicken (including the bone), and when he wanted feeding, he used to turn up at the door to our house and sit on the mat waiting for supper.
