Discrimination for being unemployed ?

well i have been looking at renewal quotes, I was made redundant in oct, also unable to find new employment as my wife has a terminal illness, with only weeks to live.
I am now her carer,am able to claim income support, as opposed to jsa, i also have 3 young children.
Why am i being discriminated ? the difference of being employed to unemployed is £200, crazy.
Why am i classed at being a BIGGER risk.

its disgusting, it really is.

    More risk of fraud....That's all.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Surely you are not unemployed as you are not looking for work, so say you have taken early retirement to look after your wife.

no but why not house husband / homemaker - thats what I selected as I have not signed on or sought work since being made redundant. with me the quote for house husband was the same as employed

    Insurance companies don't actually CARE.....
They have an excuse to charge more (irony being in circumstances you can afford less).... so that is all this is (unfair and annoying as it is).

I think knightstyle made a very clever suggestion.... and certainly you are not looking for work so ????

I have suggested before that sometimes insurance brokers can be a good route.... (and importantly their advice is FREE to you)... This is really only based on personal experience and some old advice from my father I ignored and then wished I hadn't... and years ago having a broker as a neighbour.... I no longer know or have any relationship other than the 'professional' one with my broker for my car insurance ... so this is just my experience!

My experience is brokers know the insides of policies... years ago I had to take my car abroad and my creative brokers found a company that allowed 3 months/yr that didn't require them to be notified of specific dates for the green card!
(In other words so long as I never had an accident and returned to the UK every 3 months preferably to have a ferry ticket I saved a shed load...)
It was somewhat stretching the truth but they seemed happy to wiggle and fill things in so they were not actually untruthful!

It might be worth seeing if you might find one that can somehow suggest employment status that is not untruthful?

I still use the same one I went to 20 years ago (300 miles away close to my parents ) but I'd suggest a local one you can go in face to face?

    not really
When I worked as a chef on licensed premises,I had higher premiums, despite not drinking
when I became a full time student,my premiims went up
    etc etc
    its about risks and percentages

I didn't get hit with a larger premium, but I did lose my "any car" clause as a consequence of telling them I was unemployed.

Also with you declaring your status as unemployed they may see you as a higher risk with regards to getting the money on time each month.

You can retire at any age as long as you can support yourself financially. Loads of lucky/frugal people retire well before they are eligible for the state pension.
