Does going on the internet mess up a computer?

Options
My OH has a work laptop and I use it for going on here, ebay etc, Not anything dodgey! But I was just wondering whether general internet use slows a computer down quite a bit?! I do clear cookies etc......

Not really, unless you've picked up a virus or spyware.
  • Funny you mention that, ours has a funny one around 5.00 pm ish if we a surfing. Mainly mouse is slow to respond, new screens are slow load, all is fine the rest of the time. Computer is bang up to date anti virus, updates, etc.

If you're using Windows then possibly, if you're not running a firewall and have got some viruses or spyware. Give your disk a scan to find out.
  • There are so many variables in your problem, it's hard to give a definitive answer.

1.) It could be the specifications on your laptop. Is it running an older operating system or a older version of the specific web browser.

2.) If your laptop is configured to download updates for the anti-virus/spyware package installed, it will obviously slow down your internet access whilst you're online. The solution in this case is to either change the updates to manual or allow the laptop time to update when you turn it on, and then after say 10 minutes start your web browsing activities.

3.) You may have picked up some spyware that is slowing your access or leeching your bandwidth. If your not sure do a complete system scan.

4.) Do you have a wireless network? Is secure or is someone leeching your bandwidth?

I hope this helps a little. If you could post some further details then we can possibly narrow down the problem and resolve it quicker.
