Hi
HELP NEEDED FOR HALIFAX BANK CHARGES
I bank with Halifax and have an arranged overdraft which to be fair I always live in. The problem is I checked my account yesterday and was £60 over my arranged overdraft so am now being charged £5 a day which I know about. But then I checked it again today and I'm now £150 over my arranged overdraft so a direct debit must have gone out.
Now if I'm already over my over draft and have no funds available to me can Halifax let the direct debit go? What makes it worse is that I think it could be Decembers bank charges so can they take their bank charges and make me more overdrawn which will cost me more money?
Can someone please tell me if they can do this?
And can someone please tell me if I can get these back as all my child tax credits will just go to paying if my overdraft and bank charges so we will now have no money till payday.
ANY HELP AND ADVICE WELCOME

I suggest you contact the bank asap to enquire as to what the debit was actually for.
You don't seem to know, so it could be anything. If it's a DD you no longer wish to have paid, then cancel the DD mandate.
If its bank charges, of course these will be applied to your account as per the notice you would have received.
In general, spending money you do not have (or do not have an agreed borrowing in place for) is interpreted as a request to increase your borrowing to cover that extra amount. Each request is assessed on its merits. In the event such a request is refused, they will still charge you, so try and improve your financial management of the account.

Certainly they can allow direct debits when you have gone over your agreed overdraft. At least it saves you paying the DD originators for failed collections.
If it is time to pay the bank charges, they can take them from the account even if this increases the amount by which you have exceeded the previously authorised limit. Why should they not have what is theirs?0 -

The clerk at the bank has to make a judgement call. Pay it so you dont suffer the embarrassed of a bounced item and you suffer charges or bounce it and you suffer charges. If you leave it in the hands of the bank then you have to accept their decision. But then I checked it again today and I'm now £150 over my arranged overdraft so a direct debit must have gone out.
Although if that was a potential balance rather than an actual balance then the d/d could be bounced and yet to show on the potential balance. The fact you dont appear to know your transactions is a bit worrying about how you control your finances. Especially if you run your account close to the limits. You really need to know what you are spending, what has gone through and what you have left. And can someone please tell me if I can get these back as all my child tax credits will just go to paying if my overdraft and bank charges so we will now have no money till payday.
Most banks are sympathetic if is your first offence and will refund some or all as a goodwill gesture. If you have done this before then normally they say no.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. Thank you all.
Firstly I know that it would either be bank charges or sky that put me well overdrawn and in fact it was both. Again like you said it's better to pay then than to pay their charges etc.
But they have both gone and that's that so now I want to know how to get some charges back. Yes on a few times I have gone over my arranged over draft but have always paid the charges and have never asked for a penny back so please advice in this would be very greatful0 -
Unless you can demonstrate current financial hardship your only chance of recovering any charges is to apologetically grovel and promise not to do it again.
However, you mention that you have done this a few times so you should be looking ahead to make sure that it doesn't happen again. The easiest way is to keep a very simple record of income and expenditure each month that takes at most 5 minutes a day to update.0 -

If you know anyway we can get any of the money we've spent in the local supermarket on groceries back, or perhaps money spent on fuel at the local filling station, please advise
