Best to switch before or after move?

Hello

My first post so please be kind! I did do a search for 'moving' before posting but couldn't see anything relevant. My boyfriend and I are hoping to be moving into our first owned place this year, and along with that we want to do a proper check of the utilities we're using and review that we are getting the best deal. My question is, would we be better to do this before or after moving into the new place?

You need to register with the existing suppliers to the property on the day you become responsible for it (first day of Tenancy Agrrement or day of completion) before you can do anything else. :)
  • Thanks Wywyth, that's really helpful to know - so looks like we'll be switching after moving in then!

As above, register then switch-it will take 4-6 weeks from then.
From day one you are in a deemed contract with the existing suppliers.

Assume from your post that you & b/f are renting together at the moment

    Where you are now
Visit some Switch sites useing your Annual Kwh consumptions for Elec (& Gas?) to get alternative prices
Don't worry about 'Lock-in' fees on any tariff that suits you, as they will not be charged if you move home.

    When you move
As already posted, report your occupation to that dwellings Gas/Elec supplier(s) on the day you move in and give them the meter readings.
This supplier will treat you as a 'new' account and as such put you on their expensive 'Standard' tariff - As soon as you have the Welcome documentation from that supplier, start looking for a better deal on the Switch sites
  • Thank you dogshome - really helpful! We will definitely follow your advice.
