Just wondering ... If a compliance officer from the job center asks me for my bank statements for the last three months do I have the right to cover up my outgoings so they can not see them as surely all that is off concern to them is what money I have coming into my account ?
thanks !
thanks !

That should be irrelevant. Why would you need to hide that anyway.
All benefit people want to know is your income only from all sources, be it pension, Ebay sales, employment, Tax credits and so on. So if you have been honest 100% about it all, there should be no problem at all.0 -
money going out is potentially of interest, I should think. Depends what they're looking for - if you have a current account which clearly shows you're paying gas, electric, water, insurances, TV licence, supermarket shop, that kind of thing, they can be as sure as they can be that you don't have additional money coming in from elsewhere or any kind of hidden account or other income.
I once did a job detecting fraud use of grant monies so I'm suspicious in that way! It's what I would look for - although I suspect the DWP has access to lots of info if they are genuinely concerned that you are doing something you shouldn't.
Contrary to popular opinion, you can spend the money you get on whatever you want...not sure how long that will last, though!0 -
If they are funding your day to day needs then surely they have some sort of interest in how you are spending that cash. Now if you were earning your monies and spending it down the pub nobody would bat an eyelid at that !0

No, you cannot blank out your outgoings. Amongst other reasons, if you are close to the capital limit, or have been over it, they may wish to check if you are disposing of money by having others hold it for you.0

The only people allowed to redact are politicians hiding "expenses", local authority officers hiding malpractice and incompetence, and police officers hiding the truth. You, a lowly member of the species, "the little people", just have to do what you're told.0

Some people might not want their subscription to Men Only revealed.
It's possible an expense might indicate the possibility of something else. Renting a workshop or shop might, for example, raise the possibility of some kind of self employment.
But blank out even the most tiny amount and it might look as if someone was hiding a transfer to their Swiss Bank Account.:rotfl:0 -
provide the evidence requested, or dont claim...
its simple really... isnt it
i was actually asked for copies of my CREDIT CARD statements as my shopping and day to day spending is on credit card (tesco clubcard points)
all that ever left my account over the three monthly periods was almost a grand to the CC company.
the CC statement was full of asda /tesco/morrisions / petrol / etc payments...
(as well as paypal payments for 1.99 / 0.99 / 2.99 ETC for odds n bobs.)
the DWP can ask for any banking information... and credit cards are classed as banking information etc too...0 -

Hi I have been called into a compliance meeting, I am just wondering if you found the answer to your question? Can I cover up my outgoings(or at least where they are going not the amount) and will I get penalised if i do or don't?0 -
Why does the DWP ask for bank statements in any event?
It seems to me they have some kind of access to accounts in anyway. So one would think they have the information they require perhaps...0 -

No idea, prob to make us who don't-really-want-to-be-there-but-need-to-survive-somehow sweat. Apparently it might be random, but I got my tax return from HMRC and tax refunded via my part-time job wage slip. I'm on income based so maybe that's why and this months is significantly higher due to tax returned since october. I have only received it once and i hope this doesnt mess it up for me.0
