Transferring Insurance from old car
My son's car will "badly" fail its upcoming MOT (drives fine, but uneconomic failure points - like a failed reflector in the headlamp unit), so he has cut his losses and agreed to buy a "new" second-hand car. The insurance is affordable and the sale agreed for payment and collection. His insurance company will transfer him to the new car.
So, when he goes to collect the new car, how does he then dispose of the old one? It can't be driven to the vendor, because it will not be insured to take it away. Likewise, if I take him, and the old one remains parked outside his house, it becomes uninsured as soon as he transfers the insurance.
The likely value of the old car is so low that one realistic way to dispose of it is to drive it to the local recycler - which it is perfectly easy but for the insurance aspect above.
So what does one do in these circumstances?

He drives the old car to the recycler.
He walks to get his new car, or you give him a lift.0 -
Trade the car in or is it a private seller?
Sell it before the insurance runs out.
Is he really buying a new car because he doesnt want to spent £10 on a new lamp unit?
Sounds like i want a new car rather than needs a new car.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
my local scraper gives around £100 for any car collected a bit more as a drive up.
Check ebay for spare/repair sales or even your local freeadds if you don't want much money.
Does not sound that expensive a fix unless there is more wrong
whats the car, age, mileage, problem list0 -
Ask your insurer for advice - when I traded in my car they made sure that both cars were covered on the handover day so that I could drive the old one to the dealers and the new one back again.0

Yes, insurance companies will consider any position, as long as it's reasonable. I'm thinking they'd happily cover both cars for one day, on the basis that it's no more risk as you can only be driving one of them at any time.:T:T:T
