Gift card problems HMV etc

Beware the gift card! Wonder how much money big biz makes through unspent gift cards? I was given HMV gift card tried to use on website and told it was for store use only!! We live no where near HMV shops and never visit centres. Customer services initially suggested we hang on to it in case we find ourselves near store! In middle of asking customer services to resolve 10 mins on 0845 and e mail so far.... Come on HMV!

They'll be going bust very soon. You want to use that gift card ASAP.

HMV Online and HMV instore are operated as separate companies. It has always been this way.

How insensitive of the person to buy it for you... Not a lot of retailers let you use their physical gift cards online, next time ask for your gifts more carefully!

It even turns out that HMV do sell online gift vouchers too, so if that's what you wanted, that's what you can get. I think it's a little bit unfair to slate a company for not being able to use gift vouchers online, as mentioned above, lots of companies run their online businesses separately, so there can be no cross over of payment.
  • WH Smith is another where you can't use their giftcard on line.....but if you get the items delivered to the store, you pay the store prices

You could sell them on Ebay/Gumtree or via a local ad in the newsagents window etc...even if you take a couple of quid loss on the value.

They may be valid for 2 years, but I can't see HMV in their current form being around then.

tbh a lot of companies work like this. Many have e-vouchers which only exist in email form and can only be used online, then if you buy a physical gift voucher in-store it can only be used in physical stores. Not sure why tbh.
