Mobile Phone on your SOA

Having read a few SOA's over the past few weeks on here, I notice they nearly always include Mobile Phone costs. People often say "this can be cut down". I was just thinking, do we really NEED them at all?
A mate of mine has never had one, doesnt want one and never will. He copes ok. What do you all think?
How daft are we as consumers to think we NEED these when really we only WANT them?
I for one am a sucker and pay for one for the wife and the DD as well.

well i have one and i dont so to speak, i have a brick thats pay as you go and its rare for me to top up once every 3 months. I use mine for emergencies only or for my mother to contact me. It is always on silent or switched off.
I must agree and i think they are the must have fashion acc and if you havent got a mobile phone you are frowned upon these days but yes you can have mobiles at a cheaper rate than some contract packages you just have to shop around and find the best deal/option suited to you0 -
I have a payg mobile and the only reason I have it is for emergencies (DH bought it for me). Also, if I am out and about and something happens to the children at school or preschool they are able to get hold of me (has happened quite a few times this term already  ). I top up very rarely, in fact the last time I topped up with £10 was 5 Feb (remember that cos its my DD birthday!). I still have £8.42 left!
DH has a contract phone (trying to get his credit rating up) and is on the lowest tariff (£14.99), (hes in the forces so at sea a lot) and he will generally give me a quick ring to let me know which phone number I can call straight back on.
I get discounted calls from the home phone to mobiles.0 -
I agree too.
I have a mobile but rarely use it - I only have it on incase the school or family need to contact me in an emergency.
It is PAYG and I top up with £20 (and get £5 free) The last time I topped up was December and I still have £17.00 left !!!
I nearly die when I see some people are spending £65 on their mobiles. DH's brother regularly has bills for £200 and I just don't get how he manages this -especially with all the "free minutes" he gets !!!!

Hi KEVSTER nice to hear from you. how are you doing?????
We all have PAYG mobiles. myself which I dont really need, my DH, and my 2 DS's which I like them to have as they are 13ys and 14yrs so I can contact them when they are late home it puts my mind at rest. We dont top up every month just when we really need to. A tenner can last 6 months.

I have a mobile from orange on a cashback contract. I got it so that I had a phone for when DD is at school and DS is at prescool. I use it as my alarm clock and I get 200 minutes 50 orange minutes and 75 texts a month. DH's friends are always on mobiles to contact so it is free to ring them and I can phone DH and my sister who lives quite a way away. I pay £30 a month but with the cash back the year will have cost me £40.89 or approx £3.41 a month. This is cheaper than paying landline call costs sp we save money. If I can find another cashback contract in June then I will get another and sell the phone. If not, I will cancel it and put my old PAYG sim card in it.Debt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0

its a strange thing how attitudes have changed in as little as 10years.
back then i new virtually no-one with a mobile except if it came from work, virtually no one had Sky, noone had broadband, all we had was a landline at say £15 a month.
Now its normal to have Landline (15), broadband (15), two mobiles say 60, sky 45 making £135 that is almost considered essential and thats leaving out the kids PAYG mobiles (essential because of the security aspects.. how did we manage before).0 -
I guess that is part of the mystery...essential due to security etc.... how did we manage then?MBNA are a joke.

I have a contract mobile.. Yes i dont NEED it but its easer to have one
my bills are £35 a month. I never use my home phone so that is only line rental every month. the only reason i have that is broadband. and no i dont have sky
im going to be getting sky soon for the base package so i can get there broadband. works out nice and cheap
with cutting back on everything i have cut out on this last year i personaly feel for myself that loosing broadband/mobile is just going a TAD to far for myself. As it would make life a little harder.0 -
I have a contract that costs me £25.00 a month. I'm on T-mobile's Flex tarrif so I get a £60 allowance to spend each month. For me this is worth it. I rarely use the home line, it's my Mum's so I would pay her for the calls anyway.
I could probably manage without one, but it makes my life easier. Think is I know I would spend more than £25 a montly if I had a pay as you go. For me contract is better!Current debt - £16,300Debt at worst 17/03/2011 - £18,067.62:eek::eek::ANot going anywhere else, ever again :A0 -
I would've said my mobile was essential, but in my last house (only moved in Feb) we didn't have a landline. Now we do it does give me second thoughts. I am so used to being able to text OH and ask him to pick something up from the supermarket if we need it, or for him to let me know where he is - it does stop a lot of worrying. But if we had been living together ten years, what would we have done? Gone without or gone back out after getting in, made do with something else and just seen each other once we were home.
If I lost mine or it was stolen I'd be pretty annoyed but I'm certain I could cope without it!0
