Santander's basic bank account (together with HSBC) doesn't offer a debit card, probably why it's rarely mentioned on this forum.

But they do offer the Instant Plus account, which can be opened in branch and does come with a debit card.

This is also open to people with low credit scores.
  • Thanks guys.

For the record I know i'm running out of options, the problem is not my financial lifestyle but the simple fact that I'm unemployed and constantly have to switch between JSA and ESA which causes all sorts of problems with non-payment and late payments. When then I can't trust my banks to give me accurate statements or cancel standing orders when asked i'm stuck - I have to have standing orders, there's no other way to pay some bills.

Would it not be possible to pay bills at Post Office, at a local shop by Paypoint or at a branch of the Payee's bank if cashflow / timing is critical?

Alternately, you may need to continue to use a mainstream bank but
keep a very accurate record of spending versus bank balance to ensure you always have enough funds to cover outgoings.
I know this is probably not most convenient way but it may avoid bank charges, unpaid bills, etc.

    Which bills?
Why would faster payment not work?
