Removal of RHT meter and E-on

The benefit, or not, of an RHT meter depends on the individual circumstances involved.
RHT meters provide cheaper off peak electricity at some time during every 24 hour period for particular types of heating arrangements.
To do this, the meter will be wired directly into the heating/water heating circuits at the property. Removing the meter may have implications for your overall heating/water heating.
I agree with Wywth, arrange for a qualified electrician to check over your set up. The cost of this and any remedial work would be your responsibility.
Once your electrics have been sorted out, a meter change would be necessary to let you move to one of our single rate/Economy 7 tariffs. Whilst you have a RHT meter in place, I'm afraid, we'll only be able to offer the one tariff.
We're currently charging £51.06 to change a meter. This is to cover the costs of an engineer coming out and the associated admin costs.

2. e-on engineer comes out and changes standard meter for another meter.
Is their any difference in the standard meter I already have and the one your engineer would fit? Both of my meters are the white ones with digital read outs.
Can my electrician remove the RHT meter?

Get an electricain in to sort out all the wiring your side of the meter.
Then call the supplier in to remove and install new meter.
No one but the supplier (or their authorised agent) is permitted to remove the meter. If your electrician offers to do it, show him the door and find a more reputable one.0 -
- it depends on the original wiring of the dwelling, and what the DNO supplies
- some properly have an additional separate CU with autoswitching downstream of the [tails] meter
- others do not and the result is either no leccy at all outside E10 tariff times or worse
Put simply an electrician will test and rearrange everything this side of your electricity meter to work on whichever meter / tariff you choose to change to.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. As Wywth and Ritchie say, all work beyond the meter is down to your electrician. This is something we wouldn't become involved with.
We'll only attend to work on the meter itself and then only when satisfied all remedial work has been done to allow us to change the meter safely.
The meter is our responsibility, though, and mustn't be worked on by your electrician.
The meters you've described are certainly different from the type of meter you're looking for. As I said earlier, both your existing meters would need to be replaced with one conventional single rate or Economy 7 meter.

The meters you've described are certainly different from the type of meter you're looking for. As I said earlier, both your existing meters would need to be replaced with one conventional single rate or Economy 7 meter.

Hi Malc,
An e-on engineer called today to fit the new meter. All he did was remove the RHT meter, leaving the standard rate meter in place, 'not much point in replacing like with like' were his words.
You seem sure that both meters would be replaced and now I'm concerned the removal/transfer to single rate hasn't been done properly. How can I check?

Hi blueperil and sorry for the delay replying. Been out of the office for a few days and just catching up with my emails.
RHT meters differ between the various regions around the UK. In some regions, both meters are replaced whilst, in others, only the RHT part is changed. It's down to the Meter Operator for the region in question.
Is the remaining meter a single rate or two rate (Economy 7) type?
If it is, you'll be able to go straight on to a conventional tariff. Any of our advisors will be able to tell you this.
Did your electrician carry out any remedial work to make sure the new set up works ok with your particular heating arrangements?
