Electric window not working...MOT fail?

Nowadays is an electric window not working an automatic MOT fail...the cables have apparently just gone "pop"....

MOT is in Northern Ireland in a few days time...repair time including parts delivery could take up to a fortnight....

Any advice?

thanks for that but the advice is nearly 4 years old, I thought there was a recent mot update re: electrical components having to work e.g. dash warning lights, self levelling headlamps etc and I wondered was this (electric windows) part of the update, the MOT in N.I. is done by government agency not private garages.

I'm pretty sceptical that the MOT test worries about windows. Certainly it didn't use to, and you can find threads on the internet confirming this.

Whether it's been added in the last year or so I'm still sceptical, but you could try a quick call to the MOT station you're due at just to be absolutely certain.

I've phoned to ask questions like that before, like a cracked headlight lens temporarily clear taped over while finding a replacement (ok, and I went a few days early just to get someone to look at it) or a bent towbar after an accident (towbar not tested)

No they're not part of the MOT (assuming NI uses basically the same criteria as here).

The new fails for electrical items are all (at least notionally) safety related:

dashboard lights are so you can see your speedo at night (only the lights for the speedo can fail, other gauges can still be unlit)

headlamp self-levelling - prevents dazzling other drivers

airbag and stability control warning lights - warn you of a fault in safety systems

battery security - a loose battery can cause fires if it moves and shorts to the bodywork

wiring security - loose, unsupported wiring can cause fires.

Not being able to wind a window up and down doesn't affect safety and isn't included in the updates.

NI test is stricter than ours.. in england the windows dont have to open.

I suspect that the Irish may fart more in their cars if they require them too :)

Windows are considered to be safety critical systems, to the extent that many will automatically open if the car becomes immersed in water (Honda civic for definite}.

For any safety critical system to be excluded from MOT, You would effectively render an MOT as pointless.

Not included in the NI test either:

    http://www.dvlni.gov.uk/Freedom%20of%20Information/Light%20Vehicle%20Inspection%20Manual.html

Windows are checked for being there, for being made of safety glass, and for damage that might cause injury only (tested under "Drivers view of the road" from the page linked)
