The own vehicle damage element of the friend's policy policy wasn't in force when this incident took place, the car was only covered by a third party only DOC extension so it cannot be invoked!

The person parking the car was the person in charge of it for insurance purposes.

    really?

So if I park a car I've been using under DOC and it gets hit, vandalised or stolen then the owners own fully comp insurance won't pay up? How long does this lack of cover last? An hour? day? week? until someone else drives it?

Seems more likely (and fairer) to me that as soon as I park it and walk away then my use of it has ended and so the owners insurance would be fully in force.

It lasts as long as you are in charge of the car.

yep, which I'd say is until I park it and walk away.

Are you sure? My understanding is that it only lasts as long as you are sitting in the driving seat.

Having said that, your interpretation makes a lot more sense.

Not until someone else takes over being in charge.

The car was 220 miles from its owners at the time, and yes we were sitting in it, although the engine wasn't running. 10 seconds earlier and I'd have had my feet stuck between the kerb and the wheel as I'd just got in the passenger seat and the car mounted the kerb in the crash.

Liability doesn't seem to be an issue. The biggest problem (other than the fact that the car hasn't been repaired/written off in almost a month, which actually isn't that big a deal at the moment) is that we now can't change insurance companies at the end of the month because they won't give us our full no claims until it's resolved.

You should be able to, but may be harder with an open claim.

Just get quotes using the lower NCD but if you find another insurer, get them to confirm they will raise it to the correct amount once the claim is closed and your current insurers provide proof of the reinstated number of years.
