Tax on Money Gifts

My daughter works in a Residential Care Home, and occasionally a resident or their family will give money to the staff for Christmas etc. This is put into the Staff Fund, held by the Home Owner, and has always been equally divided between the staff at Christmas. It doesn't usually amount to much, maybe £50 each. My question is this - does this money need to be declared for tax by either the staff or Care home owner? It isn't intended as wages, just a Christmas gift to the staff.

The honest answer is yes, it does need to be declared. However, the sum concerned is so modest that it would be impractical to do so and highly unlikely to attract the attentions of HMRC.0
