office chair advice needed

Hi i want a new chair for my office at home, i spend about 8-10 hours a day infront of computer.

i dont have a big budget but ive tried a few different types of chair and they always seem to break etc

just as an example here is the chair i had before:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/QUALITY-SWIVEL-PU-LEATHER-EXECUTIVE-OFFICE-FURNITUE-COMPUTER-DESK-OFFICE-CHAIR-/260980592770?pt=UK_BOI_Office_Equipment_Supplies_Office_Furniture_ET&var=&hash=item3cc3a7d082

but after a while these chairs lose shape and balance and this causes alot of back pain. they wobble so when you sit back your sitting back at a slight angle and over time it starts to hurt you.

i threw it out last year and ive been sitting on a cheapo wooden chair which is falling apart.

so then last week i went out and bought this chair:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LUXURY-BROWN-OFFICE-COMPUTER-CHAIR-SPORTS-CAR-SEAT-BUCKET-FAUX-LEATHER-MESH-EXEC-/400345696843?pt=UK_BOI_Office_Equipment_Supplies_Office_Furniture_ET&hash=item5d36768a4b

but i returned it after 1 day as i could just tell it was going to end up like the previous one.....

i think its the base of these chairs that cuases the problem (and also the fact they are all probably made in china......very cheaply and poorly)

im not so bothered about the swivel or even the recline......i just want something good and solid that wont lose shape or anything overtime.

i dont have a bigbudget though or i would go for one of the herman miller chairs.......they look fantastic

i want to spend about £70

im from the birmingham area.......but finding stores to go into so i can try some out is nearly impossible!

i went to staples but all the chairs were swivel base and very expensive....

anybody got any suggestions please, ive been looking around for 2 weeks now!

thanks

Is there an Ikea anywhere near you? They do some pretty good value mesh-back ones, and the great thing about Ikea is that they last for years.

There is also no real substitute for actually sitting in the chair. I recently bought a Humanware chair which was originally £400+ (not a huge amount cheaper than a Herman Miller) by mail order, and after 2 weeks had to give up on it and go back to my Ikea chair. Although it got great reviews, it just did not fit me.

listen if you are going to spend 10 hours aday 5 days a week in it. then £70 will mean you might get 4 weeks out of it. Do yourself and your back a favour and get top quality. Have you thought about refurbished ?

  • I have been working from home for nearly 5 years and must have gone through 6 chairs, 2 stools and even tried a standing desk.

The chair I am on at the moment I bought in September and I can't fault at all. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005F3VGDW/ref=oh_details_o00_s01_i00

The mesh lower-back support is brilliant, the base gas strut is solid and stays put and the back adjustment is precise and stays in place.

I spent around £150 a few years ago on a chair from staples. At the time it seemed a lot of money, but it was worth it as the quality is much better.
The sheet metal used in the reclining back mechanism was about twice as thick as in my previous chair which actually sheared off at the base mounting.
The padding and shape is better, making it more comfortable.
As mentioned above it is worth spending more to get a better chair, especially sitting in it for that length of time each day. A £200 chair will last for a lot longer and be more comfortable, avoiding back pain and in the long term be cheaper than several cheap chairs.
It is essential to see the chairs in a shop to check the quality and try them to see if they are suitable and comfortable .

You need to find an office chair that's actually rated for 8 hours use. If you look on office suppliers sites they actually rate them this way, chairs rated for occasional use won't be up to the job.

When hubby & I both needed new chairs a couple of years ago I looked everywhere as I wanted metal bases (as I'd had a plastic one break at the castor), and they needed to stand up to regular use.

I found the chairs I wanted in an office supply shop would at about 80 quid, searched eBay and managed to find them for half the price. They have had regular use since then - hubby often sits in front of his computer for hours on end! and they are both still as strong as the day I bought them.
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys

ljonski: i know i should invest in something more decent but i was stretching it as it was......most people keep telling me to buy one for £20 and be done with it!

fwor: i just came back from ikea today and spent a good while trying out different chairs, they were all swivel bases but alot stronger and sturdy than the chinese rubbish on ebay thats for sure!

here are the 3 chairs i liked and were within budget (kinda):

    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20196812/

    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S79894445/

    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20103101/

i liked the last one the most, but obviously it is £120 and strecthing my budget alot! it also comes with a 10 year gaurantee, but not sure exactly what that covers?

floopnoodle: i like the look of that chair, its out of stock and also double my budget, but having sat on a mesh back chair in ikea i can see why they are good....

But im not sure about doubling my budget for one, the one in ikea is £20 cheaper and has a higher back which i did like and it felt comfortable.

kitschkitty: can you show me a pic of these chairs please? thanks

Also i have found these two chairs, what do you guys think?

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330835965421?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

and this one (again way over budget):

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ergonomic-High-Back-Black-Office-Chair-in-Air-Mesh-Fabric-Memory-Foam-Chairs-/150944163554?pt=UK_BOI_Office_Equipment_Supplies_Office_Furniture_ET&hash=item2324f926e2

Again thanks for all your help, much appreciated :)
