Ok, simple scenario, you park your own car, you have the insurance details in the glovebox or hidden away elsewhere so not to be a 'numpty'. 2 hours later you return and your car has been stolen, you ring your insurers who say, sorry we have no record of you, how would you feel??0

Taking a copy would work.
I do think that Direct Line are in the wrong here - regardless of what their computers say, they are covering you. Where I work we sometimes have problems as not everyone's details are held by us, we often need to ring the broker for details - and if someone doesn't know who their broker is, we can't do anything to find their policy - but with Direct Line that shouldn't be an excuse.
Going forward, make an itemised list of costs you've incurred (phone calls - from your phone bill, petrol based on the mileage, any other provable costs - don't be tempted to exaggerate as they're more likely to argue) and then ask them for £100 (in my opinion) on top to cover your distress and inconvenience.
As has been said, there's no point writing an emotional letter, keep it simple, and explain you're unhappy with the service and believe they should compensate you.0 -
Sounds like Christmas was pretty much ruined by the accident anyway. DL made it worse - I would agree with above, £100 is what I would ask for.0

I don't know my membership number, but i do know my breakdown is with AA & i do know it was taken out as Roadside Relay. I know this for a 100% fact. I don't know my car insurance policy number, but i do know who i'm insured through & also how it was paid.
I also know the address of where i live - which is linked to both accounts.
I know what union i am with & i know what number to call, however i don't know my membership number. When they ask for it when i do call - i ask them to check my address. They huff & puff, but they always find me. Address has worked every time.
Oh & for the record - just because someone agrees with you doesn't make it decent advice.0 -
A good tip is to store the phone numbers for your Breakdown Cover and / or Insurance Claims numbers on your phone and create an extra entry for them for the policy number.0
