OP, why have you set your sights on a 16 hr job? is it so you can rake in as much benefit cash as possible with the least effort by any chance?

if you have the chance to work, why not work... as others said, when it comes to move on, it may go for you... an employer is more likely to employ a single parent who has worked 10 hrs a week than one that hasnt worked for three years etc... (whether or not this is deemed discrimination isnt the point... it happens)

also, i know my employer employs people telling them "i wont be able to give you X hours straight away.." so as not to tie themselves in... but if the new starter works hard etc, they find themselves on whatever hours they want/need. (much like Mistress above)

What a sad state this country has reached when people who should be out there working hard and trying to improve their life are instead spending time inputting data into the "entitledto" calculator and working out how many hours they have to work and how many hours they can sit on the sofa and watch telly. I cringe every time I read a post that says someone is worried about working extra hours because they will be worse off. Disgraceful and an utter and complete farce. I just hope Labour and their brain dead politicians dont come to power for a few decades.

the job involves sitting in a car for as many hours as you work,it is a homecare job,i wouldn't get paid for travelling in the car,nor would i expect to.being out for 32 hours and being paid for 16 is all i can fit in at the minute as i have a baby so sorry if you assume i'm not trying hard enough.we aren't all perfect and some of us like to spend time with our kids aswell as work.

We all want to spend more time with our kids. I leave home at 5 am and comeback at 8 pm and many days I hardly manage to interact with my kids. Is it fair on me ? No,I have that much self respect for myself that I go out there working hard at my job and paying my taxes which the govt then hands over to you who choose to sit at home to spend time with your kids when you can be out there working like i do. Think about that.

All parents would like to spend more time with their children, thats fine as long as they dont expect others to fund that choice. Parents should be financially responsible for their children not other tax payers and if that mes working full time then thats what needs to be done.
  • One step at a time. OP take the job as it may be good for your self confidence, test the water- tax credits etc, your family and build it up only if you feel it is right.
It is your life and do what you feel works.
