Charitable Donations

Options
Hi, I am registered self employed with HMRC and am currently doing my online self assessment. I only earn a few hundred pounds a year doing surveys so as yet have never been asked to pay tax, being so far below the threshold. Last year I began making a small monthly donation by direct debit to a charity, but because I am under the tax threshold I didn't join the charity's Gift Aid scheme. The wording on their paperwork regarding Gift Aid was "Your donations are eligible for the scheme if you pay an amount of income tax at least equal to the tax the charity reclaims on your donations" so I thought that meant that I wasn't eligible. However, on my tax return it is asking if I have made any charitable donations. So my question is, do I declare these donations to the taxman, even though the charity isn't reclaiming on my donations? My earnings for the tax year concerned are still way below the tax threshold.

Many thanks if anyone can advise me.
