Car tax disc? do i leave it when I trade in?

  • I have just today sold my dead Rover 25 to a dealer and he was whinging about road tax. Basically I bought the car in late July and last week the head blew, no comeback as it was bought privately. The garage that was having a look at it said a local dealer was keen so I agreed to sell the car with the orig radio and paperwork. So I went up to have one last look see at it and took out the tax disk. Today he was whining that I took it out, well having lost the sum of roughly £600 on a car in just over a month I told him tough and could have easily flogged it to a mate who wanted it. I had £100 still to reclaim so I took the disk out. If they don't mention it up until the point of transfer the car and everything inside is still yours. To be quite honest they're either gonna make money off you by selling it on for profit or are making a profit in the car you're buying off them so sod them.

You will never get a valid tax disc off a dealer on any car you buy.

I bought a taxed car at auction!

(Mind you there wasn't THAT long left but it meant I could get it home!)

    It is really not hard.

If you haven't agreed that the tax disc is included i.e. not mentioned it at all then take it off and cash it in.

If you have agreed that the tax disc is included then you give them the car plus the tax disc.

On the car you buy if they mentioned that tax was included or you negotiated that it was included you get a tax disc.

If you haven't then you have to make sure you are able to get one from a nearby post office before you drive the car anywhere.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Not sure why an old thread has been resurected.

But, dealer's can't now apply for a refund on the tax disc. Only the registered keeper can apply for it. So tax disc is worthless to delaer unless they want to registered vehicle in their name, which would add another owner and decrease value of vehicle.

yeah thats why the local scrap yard who gets the scrappage scheme cars around here got a car in from a bmw dealer iirc with almost a years tax

they sent the disc up to the dealer to tell the last owner/keeper to apply for a refund of the tax

I don't think "another owner" would decrease the value of a Rover 25, draining petrol tank perhaps!!
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
