  • As others have said, try for your University's hardship fund/access to learning fund etc - go and see your student funding department.

Also, try your Uni's careers service. They often have part time short term contracts (often within the uni itself) which you can apply for (uni's like to employ their own students) and have contacts with local employers. Take a CV along with you and they can help you with applying for jobs etc. Some places have drop in sessions, or you may need to book an appointment if you want more help, but go in and talk to someone.

If you are in your third year you should be starting to apply for things now, its a tough market at the moment (don't I know it!) and it helps to get a head start.

As an a last resort, perhaps talk to your bank and ask if they will temporarily extend your overdraft perhaps (I don't know much about this stuff) but they are bound to look more kindly on you if you warn them in advance that you're struggling rather than just go over your limit. As a student you're a good investment for them- they want your future mortgage/credit card/ loan business so will try to keep you sweet now.

    Good luck!

    Hi there,
I'm mostly looking for advice. I've gone and gotten myself into a stupid situation. The short of it is I have a maxed out overdraft of 1600 and a student loan which falls about 100 quid short of rent.

The long of it is this. I've really never been in a bad situation with money before; I've sustained myself as long as I've been at uni, and this is the longest I've gone since I was 17 without working. I'm in third year now, and have worked full time both summers I've been at uni, and part time during term. After the summer, I didn't look for a job immediately- I was utterly exhausted, and had just come away from working all day 5 or 6 days in a remote place with my then boyfriend. I came back, struggled to readjust; my relationship broke down, my health hasn't been great and my heart wasn't really in my studies. I got extensions on all my coursework, due to symptoms of anxiety (I hate that I did this, but it really was necessary) and with everything that was happening, I didn't get a job and quickly ate through the money I'd saved and ended up in this debt.
I'm here by my own hand, I have no illusions about that, and it's my problem to get through :) I've managed to pay rent, but it's left me 50p short of my limit until my loan comes in, which will immediately have to go towards next months rent. I'm applying for work again, but to no avail so far, and I'm really uncomfortable not having anything to fall back on for the first time. My folks are wonderful, but they don't have the money to be subsidizing me, and I wouldn't want them to be if they did. My uni is really difficult with their hardship fund too.

Any advice just now would be so much appreciated. I need a plan of action :)

because it was students they were only allowed to do totally no danger experiments - eg IQ testing after drinking grape juice for 12 weeks...

Not all medical research involves taking untested drugs. I have been involved as a research participant with a study since I was born (and yes, they pay me), and whilst they have taken biological samples, done ultrasounds and bone density scans, sent questionnaires and whatnot there has never been any possible risk to my health.

And there's the added bonus that the study has provided an incredibly complete set of data that is used by researchers worldwide, and has lead to a lot of findings e.g. that putting babies to sleep on their backs reduces the chance of cot death.

the psychology department at Leeds wouldn't let a student do 'really invasive research' hebce the grape juice for 12 weeks - I mean it would mean a few extra calories, but probably counts as one of your five a day so not actually dangerous - unless you had an actual allergic reaction....

I'm all for the non invasive-ness of that...

Could you move home? £300 rent is a lot for a student, even with a job. Whereabouts in Scotland are you?
