High Value Travel Insurance - 2 policies?

There have been several questions on here about claiming on two travel insurance policies, which would, of course be fraud.

However, I have a variation on this problem. My wife and I have a once in a lifetime holiday coming up, with flights plus other stuff costing upwards of £14,000. Most insurance policies only cover for cancellation up to £5000 max. We will be independant travellers booking flights and all the other stuff separately. So we can't do it through a travel agent or holiday company.

So, two questions........

1. Does anyone know of a good insurer for high priced holidays, preferably one that doesn't insist on return flights home being in economy class.

2. If not, is there any legal problem about taking out and claiming on two policies, so long as they are told about each other and the total amount claimed does not exceed the cost incurred? It wouldn't be fraudulent, but has anyone had problems with this approach before?

Cheers!

Ring these guys, they will either use the cruise or bespoke policy.

Bear in mind if you're a couple a decent policy will offer cancellation limit per person eg on their cruise policy you could get £10k cancellation cover each

When buying cover, bear in mind cheaper policies may not cover subsequent costs if you miss one of your internal / connecting flights. It's important you check whether this is covered if it could be important to you.
  • There shouldnt be any problem getting the limits you are wanting, many of the larger insurers do a premium cover with sufficient limits plus any MNW aimed brand will also have appropriate cover. So American Express Prestige gives £12,500 cancellation per person (so £25k for a couple), Post Office Premium is £10,000 per person, Axa Premier is £10,000 per person etc

As to getting two lesser policies, generally this will not work as it would be co-insurance rather than a primary and an excess layer - ie if you had two policies with a £5k limit then both insurers would contribute to that initial £5k payout (ie £2,500 each) rather than each paying out the £5k max giving you £10k
  • Thanks for the answers, but unfortunately, they didn't work for me.

Amex Prestige is annual only and was £503 before I started entering pre-existing medical conditions. It's a pity, because they include free CDW for car hire so this would save me an extra ploicy.

AXA has a brilliant website, but after going through pages and pages of medical information to enter, it gave me a quote (£330 for 30 days!) but the cancellation available on their best policy at this price was only £5k.

The Post Office was south of £300, but I need to call them to check all the medical conditions out and the policy wording suggests we won't be eligible.

PJ Hayman looks like a professional underwriter, but I'll give them a ring tomorrow and have a chat. There's no on-line quotation options.

If anyone has any other high value insurer ideas I'd be grateful.

I've looked at about a dozen today but I'm fed up of entering reams of data in order to see what's covered. It seems to be a common plan to get all your info before you can see the detailed Ts & Cs.

    Thanks .................

p.s. What's an MNW aimed brand and could you give me some examples?

Is any of your trip refundable? The reason I ask is that insurance will pay up to the sum insured for costs which are not recoverable. Do you actually need the full cost covered.

Remember, it is an expensive holiday so don't expect the cost of insurance to be cheap.

p.s. What's an MNW aimed brand and could you give me some examples?

MNW = mid net worth - ie those brands aimed at those that are well off rather than mass market or HNW/uHNW (ultra High Net Worth)

No, we need quite a large sum. Flights are already paid at >£6k. Final payment for a cruise is next week at >£7k. Both non-refundable. I'm currently sorting out hotels and hire cars for a month, all of which will be done on lower priced non-refundable bookings.

Many thanks for the link to Hayman that eluded me before. I've tried it and put the basic info in but it said no quotes available. So I'll ring them tomorrow.

Out of interest, I asked our cruise travel agent (a specialist). They have emailed me a huge list of insurance companies, some of whom will quote for people up to age 100 so I should find something somehow.

I'll keep you updated, but thanks so far.

If you're spending that sort of money you need to ensure you use a decent Insurer with a good policy wording.

As I mentioned before remember that a lot of policies are not designed for cruises in that should you miss your cruise due to a hiccup with the connecting flight / flights they won't pay your losses.

Also some cheaper policies may not cover a medivac helicopter should one be needed from your cruise ship.

Have a good look around and do some research.

Enjoy your holiday, it sounds like it will be the trip of a lifetime.
  • I just thought I'd provide an update on how I went on.

Amex wanted £640+ for an annual, worldwide, once I had given them the medical conditions. The maximum single trip they would cover was £3k cancellation.

PJ Hayman wanted £1033 for 33 days, without medical conditions! (or £596 for worldwide without US). Heaven only knows what they would want for a few aches and pains to declare.

CoOp bank want £9.50 per month with all conditions covered and £5k each of cover. This will be the fall back if I bomb out on the others.

My cruise specialist gave me a massive list of insurers, some of whom will even cover terminal cases and centarians. I'm just in the process of working my way through the list and getting some quotes.
